Agent overview
Neon Abyss 2 launched into Early Access with six Agents. Nik is available immediately; the other five unlock by completing a task. Two later updates added Mira (Fatal Carnival, 2025-11-27) and Cassie (Glimmer Heist, 2026-01-29).
Every Agent carries 3 Crystals (the game's premium run currency) by default. What differs is starting hearts, starting resources, the exclusive starting weapon and the Agent Item. Faith names are kept in English — mechanics are on the Faith system page.
| Agent | Hearts | Unlock condition | Starting weapon (mechanic) | Agent Item | Recommended Faith |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nik | 3 | Default — available from a new save | Windcaller — an extra laser every 4 attacks, damage scales with coins held | Legacy Watch — drop coins whenever you take damage | Consumerism / Fortunism |
| Elise | 4 | Hatch 8 eggs in total | Warming — an extra homing projectile every 5 shots, stronger per Hatchmon you field | Plush Gloves — grants Kiddy, a permanent Hatchmon that can revive downed Hatchmon | Agapeism |
| Xuan | 2 | Hold 10 purple Wisps in a single run | Fanchen — fully charged shots fire homing talismans, one per Wisp | Clarity Gourd — grazing charges it; the skill key clears bullets and releases Wisps | Umbrism |
| James | 2 | Use 30 different weapons in total | Final Wolf — coin-scaling spread shot with a long-range final pellet, pellet count scales with coins | Wedding Rings — dual-wield two weapons; vaporizing yields more Soul Shards | Artisanism |
| Saya | 2 | Reach floor 5 in a single run | Sakurafall — dashing on hit with brief invulnerability; extra jumps add dashes | Rabbit & Bear — allows dual-wielding | Artisanism |
| Lúcia | 3 | Collect and use 30 Curios in total | Not published | Carries 2 Curios and swaps between them with the skill key | Thesaurism / Consumerism |
| Mira | Not published | Added in the Fatal Carnival update (2025-11-27) | Not published | Not published | Not published |
| Cassie | Not published | Added in the Glimmer Heist update (2026-01-29) | Glint — every 4th shot becomes a lucky shot, count scales with keys held | Carousel Music Box — the skill key opens doors and chests in place of a key | Not published |
How unlocks work
- Tasks are cumulative across runs. Every Agent except Xuan counts progress across all your saves and runs. James's "use 30 weapons" is a lifetime total, not a single-run requirement, and progress never resets.
- Xuan is the only exception. His "hold 10 purple Wisps" must happen inside one run; restarting voids it.
- Where to switch. Use the Agent screen beside the dance floor at the bar to change character and check task progress. The Agent tab in the bar menu shows the same data.
- Affinity does not cap power. Each Agent has an affinity for certain item types (Xuan with Wisps, for instance), but any archetype works on any Agent. Affinity only affects how easily you assemble an archetype early — a fully formed build performs the same regardless. Don't avoid Hatchmon items just because you're playing James.
- Unlock order doesn't affect ceiling. Every Agent can clear deep floors once fully equipped; who you unlock first is just a question of which archetype you want to play next.
Surviving on 2 hearts
The Fate Card Full of Energy gives every Agent 2 shields at the start of a run, which is a huge early-game cushion for the 2-heart Agents — Xuan, James and Saya.
Recommended unlock order
Ordered by cost, with the idea that you pick up progress while playing normally:
- Saya — the condition is simply reaching floor 5, which happens within a run or two. No farming required.
- Elise — 8 total hatches. You pick up eggs regardless of build, so this accumulates on its own.
- James — challenge rooms always drop weapons, making them the fastest way to stack "30 different weapons". The Fate Card Fire Support grants weapons and counts too.
- Xuan — needs 10 purple Wisps in one run. Wait until you know the Wisp items, then dedicate a run to it.
- Lúcia — 30 Curios, and a Curio typically costs 3+ crystals. This is the most time-consuming unlock in the game.
- Mira / Cassie — install the relevant update, then check the in-game Agent screen for their tasks.
When you're one step away
Agent task progress is visible live on the Agent screen. If an Agent is one step from unlocking, play the next run for the unlock rather than for a normal build — if James needs 3 weapons, route exclusively through challenge rooms; if Lúcia needs 2 Curios, speed-run low floors for Curios and immediately restart.
Agent breakdowns
Nik — the best starting Agent
- Skill key: Legacy Watch is a passive item; Nik has no active ability. His damage rhythm comes entirely from Windcaller's "4 attacks, 1 laser" cycle.
- Early: 3 hearts plus 1 bomb and 1 key is the most forgiving opening in the game. Damage-to-coins plus room-clear coins form a steady loop that keeps his basic weapon relevant all run — ideal if you keep rolling weapons you don't like.
- Mid: Commit to the coin axis. Take a Loan from the Temple of Consumerism and borrow without spending, and Windcaller's laser damage takes off. The Hatchmon Grabie adds more coin income.
- Late: Once the coin pool is built, the laser becomes your main screen-clear. Spend item slots on survivability and range instead of swapping weapons constantly.
- Weapons and items: Keep Windcaller long-term; coin-scaling items and Grabie; Faith as Consumerism or Fortunism.
- Co-op role: A stable all-rounder with a smooth damage curve — a reliable damage slot in a four-player team that doesn't compete for team resources.
Elise — the Hatchmon summon core
- Skill key: Plush Gloves is passive and Kiddy follows permanently; there is no active ability. All of her power lives in Hatchmon count.
- Early: Unlocking her takes 8 total hatches, which happens on the way. Agapeism guarantees successful hatches, so her early damage snowballs fast; pair with the Fate Card Adorable Companion (start with 2 Hatchmon) and Warming's bonus is online immediately, making challenge rooms trivial early.
- Mid: Warming adds a random-effect homing projectile every 5 shots, and the more Hatchmon you field, the stronger that projectile gets — ideal suppression against highly mobile enemies.
- Late: A quantity-based summon build; prioritise Hatchmon capacity and survivability. Kiddy revives nearby downed Hatchmon while alive, giving her squad sustain that no other Agent has.
- Weapons and items: Warming plus any Hatchmon-type item or Fate Card; Faith as Agapeism.
- Co-op role: Summons serve as both front line and damage, and Kiddy's revive doubles in value in a chaotic four-player fight. She is the team's error tolerance.
Xuan — the graze specialist
- Skill key: Clarity Gourd is one of the few Agent Items with an active ability — grazing enemy bullets (passing close without being hit) grants brief invulnerability and charges the gourd. Once full, the skill key clears surrounding bullets and releases several Wisps. Held as an ace, that is a "don't die plus counterattack" button — save it for the densest boss phase or a challenge room.
- Early: 2 hearts leaves almost no margin. Play into bullet trails rather than away from them to keep re-triggering invulnerability and charge; offence and defence are the same action.
- Mid: His unlock condition forces a Wisp build. Fanchen's fully charged talismans scale with Wisp count, so a stationary volley can delete elites.
- Late: Umbrism amplifies Wisp value. A finished Wisp swarm plus a bullet-clearing skill makes most bosses' bullet phases irrelevant.
- Weapons and items: Fanchen, Wisp-type items, and graze-friendly shield items.
- Co-op role: Expert-tier. With teammates drawing fire he can graze safely, then clear an entire screen of bullets to rescue the team — the highest ceiling and the lowest floor of any Agent.
James — the weapon master
- Skill key: Wedding Rings is passive and lets him hold two weapons (Final Wolf plus anything); no active ability.
- Early: Farming challenge rooms (guaranteed weapon drops) is the fastest unlock. Shop purchases and the Fate Card Fire Support count too. Vaporizing weapons yields him more Soul Shards, so any new weapon levels up fast.
- Mid: The main/secondary pairing is "Final Wolf for close spread plus one long-range or homing weapon for finishing". Feed Shards to the main weapon first.
- Late: With weapon levels stacked and Artisanism as his Faith, vaporizing a single weapon nearly fills the Faith bar and hands you a free high-tier temple weapon — a clean loop of vaporize → Faith → temple gear.
- Weapons and items: Final Wolf permanently, secondary by drop; prioritise Badges that improve vaporize returns.
- Co-op role: Dual-wielding makes him the team armoury — no good drop goes to waste regardless of archetype, and his upgrade tempo is the fastest in the party.
Saya — the dash bruiser
- Skill key: Rabbit & Bear is passive and allows dual-wielding (Sakurafall plus anything). Her "ability" is the dash that triggers on attack.
- Early: Reach floor 5 in one run, which normal play handles. Even without attacking, Sakurafall's dash is a free movement tool — dodging, travelling and climbing in one motion.
- Mid: Sakurafall's level follows your main weapon's level, so the core loop is constantly vaporizing junk to feed the main weapon. The dash grants brief invulnerability on hit, so trading at close range is favourable.
- Late: More extra jumps means more dashes, so jump items double up — prioritise them and damage and mobility scale together.
- Weapons and items: Sakurafall plus a high-damage ranged secondary; jump and mobility items.
- Co-op role: The dive-and-finish slot, dashing straight onto elites and bosses. High positioning demands, so be careful bringing her to a first co-op session.
Lúcia — the double-Curio late-game monster
- Skill key: Her Agent Item is the only one that needs active management — hold 2 Curios and swap between them with the skill key. Timing is the whole skill: offensive Curio for clearing, utility Curio while travelling. Build the habit of "swap to damage on entering a room, swap to growth on leaving".
- Early (the unlock): Widely considered the hardest unlock — 30 Curios used, and a Curio usually costs 3+ crystals. Speed-run low floors: grab a Curio, use it, restart the run. Pure progress stacking.
- Mid: Once unlocked her power starts paying. Prioritise crystal-generating items (crystal containers, drop-rate bonuses) so Curios never dry up.
- Late: Free swapping between two Curios plus crystal generation enables composite builds that clear whole screens or self-buff continuously — the highest ceiling in the roster.
- Weapons and items: Her starting weapon is unpublished; all items should feed the crystal economy.
- Co-op role: The team's operations core — Curio effects that cover the whole party double in value. Best on a shot-caller who knows the route.
Post-launch Agents
Mira — Fatal Carnival (2025-11-27)
- Added in the Fatal Carnival update. The official patch notes describe her as a reckless little maniac who thrives on danger, styled as a jester around unpredictable, high-risk play.
- Starting weapon, Agent Item and unlock condition are all unpublished. Install that version and the in-game Agent screen will show her task.
Cassie — Glimmer Heist (2026-01-29)
- Added in the Glimmer Heist update; her backstory is a treasure hunter from the slums.
- Glint: a ranged firearm where every 4th shot is a lucky shot, and the number of lucky shots scales with how many keys you hold.
- Carousel Music Box: the skill key opens doors and chests in place of a key. The more keys you bank, the stronger Glint gets — a loop where the music box saves keys and keys feed the weapon.
- Risk: mistiming the music box costs you health, so check the room is clear before unlocking.
- Her unlock condition is unpublished. The same update added the returning Titan boss Prometheus from the original Neon Abyss, plus a new art-gallery god boss.
